Face shape classification is not a visual judgment. It is a set of mathematical ratios computed from precise anthropometric measurements, then compared against documented thresholds. The two measurements that form the foundation of every classification are face length (trichion to menton: hairline center to chin tip) and cheekbone width (bizygomatic width: outer cheekbone to outer cheekbone).
The ratio between these two values, called R1, is the single most powerful predictor of face shape. An R1 between 1.40 and 1.60 indicates oval. Below 1.15 suggests round or square. Above 1.60 points toward oblong or rectangle. Additional ratios, R2 (forehead to jaw) and R3 (cheekbone prominence), refine the classification for shapes like heart, diamond, and triangle where R1 alone is insufficient.

There is no official standard defining where one face shape ends and the next begins, so no tool in this category can quote a meaningful accuracy percentage, this one included. What the detector reports instead is the ratios it measured, the thresholds it compared them against, and a confidence figure describing how complete your input was and how strongly those ratios agreed. Measurement quality does depend on lighting, camera resolution, and head angle, which is why the tool refuses frames taken beyond 12 degrees of rotation rather than measuring them anyway.
Oval is widely referenced as the most common and balanced face shape in proportion analysis. Diamond is consistently the rarest. The other six shapes occur across diverse face types. The detector classifies your shape from your actual measurements rather than from population averages.
Measure four values: forehead width at the widest point, cheekbone width at the widest point, jaw width at the widest point, and face length from the center of the hairline to the chin tip. Compare these values to identify the widest point and calculate the length-to-width ratio. The manual measurement mode in the detector accepts these four values directly.
