Where to measure

  • Face length. From your hairline down to the bottom of your chin, straight down the centre. If your hairline is uneven, use the middle of where it sits.
  • Forehead width. Straight across the widest part of your forehead, roughly halfway between your brows and your hairline.
  • Cheekbone width. From the outer corner of one eye, across the top of the cheekbone, to the same point on the other side. This is usually the widest measurement on the list.
  • Jawline width. From the corner of your jaw below one ear across to the other. Find the corner by clenching your teeth: the muscle that moves is sitting on it.

Measure in front of a mirror with your hair pulled back, keeping the tape flat against your skin rather than following every curve. Measuring each one twice and using the second value removes most of the error, because the first attempt is where the tape is usually in the wrong place.

How this classifies Landmarks, formula, tolerance
The four ratios
R1 is face length over cheekbone width, and it does most of the work. R2 is forehead width over jaw width, which separates heart, square, and triangle. R3 is cheekbone width over the average of forehead and jaw, which identifies diamond. R4 is chin width over jaw width, which refines heart against triangle.
The R1 bands
Round below 1.15. Square 1.00 to 1.30. Oval 1.40 to 1.60. Oblong and rectangle above 1.60. These are anthropometric values rather than invented ones, and they overlap on purpose, because real faces do.
Why the jawline question is asked
Oblong and rectangle are the same proportions, and so are round and square. The only thing separating each pair is whether the jaw is curved or squared, and a tape measure cannot capture that. Before this question existed the calculator returned rectangle for every long face and could never return oblong at all. Your answer is the only thing that decides between them.
What the confidence figure describes
How many of the four ratios could be computed, and whether they agree with each other. It is not a probability that the category is correct. No tool in this category can honestly offer one, because there is nothing to check a correctness claim against.
What is still provisional
The weightings behind the bands, and the point on the jawline scale where curved becomes squared, have not been calibrated against a labelled set of faces. Measurements are trustworthy. Category boundaries are provisional, and this is the site saying so rather than being asked.
Units
Every ratio is a division of one measurement by another, so the unit cancels out. Millimetres, centimetres, and inches all produce the same answer, as long as you do not mix them within one set.

Questions people ask

Is measuring by hand more accurate than using the camera?

For the measurements themselves, yes. A tape measure gives you a real scale, while a camera has to infer one from the width of your iris and carries roughly four percent of uncertainty as a result. What a hand measurement cannot do is judge how angular your jawline is, which is why this tool asks you instead.

What if two shapes come out close together?

The tool says so and names both. Most real faces sit near a boundary somewhere, and the honest answer for a face between oval and oblong is that it is between oval and oblong. The styling advice for two neighbouring shapes overlaps heavily anyway, so a borderline result costs you very little in practice.

Do I need all four measurements?

Face length and cheekbone width are enough for a result, because those two produce R1. Adding forehead and jaw width unlocks the other three ratios and separates several shapes that R1 alone cannot, so the answer improves noticeably. Chin width is genuinely optional and refines only the heart against triangle distinction.

Where exactly does the cheekbone measurement go?

From the outer corner of one eye, across the top of the cheekbone, to the same point on the other side. It is usually the widest of the three horizontal measurements. Taking it too low picks up the cheek rather than the bone, which pushes the result toward round.

Are my measurements saved anywhere?

They are kept in your own browser so you do not have to measure again on your next visit, and there is a button to clear them. Nothing is sent anywhere. This site has no account to attach them to and no server that receives them.
