- The four proportions
- Face length against face width. Mouth width against nose width. The gap between the inner corners of the eyes against nose width. Face width against mouth width. These are the comparisons the phi mask is usually summarised by.
- The vertical thirds
- Hairline to brow, brow to the base of the nose, and nose base to chin, each shown as a percentage of the total. Reported as proportions rather than as phi comparisons, because the classical claim about the thirds is that they are equal. That is a different convention from a different tradition, and treating it as a golden ratio claim would misrepresent both.
- Why there is no score
- Every other tool of this kind multiplies these proportions together and prints a percentage. There is no evidence base for converting proximity to 1.618 into a statement about a face, so that percentage is a number invented to look like a measurement. Withholding it is the whole reason this tool is worth building.
- Where the mask came from
- Stephen Marquardt described it in a 2002 interview in the Journal of Clinical Orthodontics, presenting a decagon-based mask derived from the golden ratio as an ideal facial archetype. Cosmetic surgeons took it up, and it spread from there into the tools you find by searching for it.
- What the testing found
- Holland, writing in Aesthetic Plastic Surgery in 2008, used Procrustes and thin-plate spline analysis and reported that the method previously used to check faces against the mask was faulty, that the mask does not describe an ideal face shape even for white women, and that it is ill-suited to non-European populations. - Measurement accuracy
- These are ratios, so the millimetre tolerance that applies to the pupillary distance tool does not carry over: dividing one measurement by another cancels the scale. What does affect them is landmark precision, particularly at the nostril edges and the base of the nose, which sit on smooth surfaces the model locates less sharply than it locates an eye corner. What is the golden ratio face test supposed to measure?
The claim is that faces closer to a set of proportions built around 1.618 are more attractive. It traces to a mask published by Stephen Marquardt in 2002, which cosmetic surgeons adopted and which every golden ratio beauty tool online is descended from. The proportions are real and measurable. The link between them and beauty is the part that has not survived testing.
Why will this tool not give me a percentage?
Because there is nothing to convert into one. A percentage implies a scale where 100 means something specific, and the evidence does not support 1.618 being that something. Holland's 2008 analysis found the mask does not describe an ideal face even within the population it was derived from. A number that looks like a measurement but is built on a rejected premise is worse than no number, particularly for anyone who takes it seriously.
Is the golden ratio really found in the human face?
Some facial proportions land near 1.618, and some land nowhere near it, which is roughly what you would expect from any set of related measurements on any object. The stronger claim, that faces are built around phi or that matching it makes a face beautiful, has not been demonstrated. What the research does show is that the mask most often cited as proof describes a narrow subset of faces and does not generalise across populations.
My ratio is not close to 1.618. Does that mean anything?
It means your face has those proportions. That is the entire content of the measurement. There is no established relationship between distance from 1.618 and anything you would want to know about your appearance, which is exactly why this tool shows you the number and stops there.
Why do other golden ratio calculators give me a score?
Because a score is more shareable than a measurement, and because the premise is rarely checked. The maths behind those scores is usually straightforward, some combination of how near each proportion sits to 1.618, averaged. The problem is not the arithmetic, it is that the arithmetic is being applied to a claim the research does not support.
